leave the leaves - why your lawn loves a little leaf blanket

As the trees start to lose their leaves, many of us reach for the rake. But what if I told you that leaving those leaves where they fall could actually be better for your yard and the planet?
Embracing a leaf-covered lawn has some surprising perks—and it's not just about saving time. Here’s a quick guide to why your lawn (and local wildlife) will thank you for ditching the rake this season!
A Cozy Winter Home for Critters
Those leaves do more than just decorate your lawn—they provide shelter for all kinds of wildlife! When you leave your leaves, you’re creating a winter home for beneficial insects like butterflies, moths, and beetles. These little critters find a cozy refuge under the leaves, keeping them safe and warm through the colder months.
Think of it as giving back to the ecosystem! By offering a leaf-layered home for insects, you're helping them survive, ultimately benefiting the birds and other animals that rely on them for food. So, each leaf left behind is a little habitat for some of nature’s most essential helpers.

Natural Plant Food for Spring
As leaves start to decompose, they release nutrients back into the soil. This natural fertilizer enriches the ground and prepares it for a vibrant, healthy growing season in spring.
A decomposing leaf layer acts as a superfood for your lawn, giving plants and flowers a boost when they emerge in the spring. So, rather than carting leaves away, let them stay and work their magic on the soil!
Less Raking, Less Waste!
Did you know that about one-third of yard waste ends up in landfills? Even though leaves are compostable, a lot of them get bagged up and sent away, contributing to unnecessary landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
When we skip the rake, we’re reducing waste and keeping organic material in our yards where it belongs. This means less yard waste in our community’s landfills and a smaller environmental footprint. Plus, who doesn’t love a reason to put down the rake and kick back a little?
Mulch It Up: The Lawn Mower Trick
If you’re not sold on a full blanket of leaves, there’s a compromise: mulching! Use your lawn mower to mulch the leaves, breaking them down into small pieces that will decompose faster and nourish the soil even better. Simply mow over the leaves and let them settle into the grass! Now you’ve created a cozy, nutrient-rich layer that’s great for your lawn without the need for bagging or hauling.
So, this fall, skip the rake, mulch the leaves, and let your lawn soak up all those natural benefits. Your local wildlife, your plants, and even the planet will thank you!
Absolutely right! This is what we do but we are an island in our area and my hubby worries that pple think we’re lazy! Really we’re just trying to restore nature so everyone can benefit. So many bad habits associated with modern life.
